HIIT Workouts

22 Mar

Good morning everyone!  Another hot day here in Ohio.  I will be getting my AC units installed though today so that will help!  My place just won’t let go of the heat inside, it’s so frickin’ hot!  It’s so hard for me to sleep in the heat so the past couple nights have been extremely restless.  Looking forward to some cool nights with some restful sleep!

I went to the gym this morning & didn’t have anything in particular on my agenda.  After an easy warmup, I ended up doing a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout on the elliptical, which is posted below.  Then I did about 10 minutes of sprints on the treadmill followed by about 30 minutes of strength training using my gym’s hoist machines.

What is HIIT you ask? HIIT involved short bursts of sprints/all out efforts, followed by short recoveries, & you keep repeating.  It gets your heart rate up & always keeps your body guessing.  According to this website,

“High Intensity Interval Training is all about speed. Speed during exercises – it’s intense. Speed during workouts – usually they last less than 20 minutes and speed for results – an hiit workout will lose up to 9 times more fat than a similar cardio workout.”

Harder efforts but shorter workouts & more fat burn?  YES!  I love HIIT workouts.  My speedwork days for half marathon training are HIIT workouts & they have definitely made me a lot faster.

Anyways, here’s my HIIT elliptical workout.  If you complete this, you can adjust the resistance to make it easier or harder, depending on your level.  Warmup for about 5 minutes before the workout & take 5 minutes to cool down afterwards.

As usual, I refueled with a protein shake that looked like this:

Blueberry-Banana Protein Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk (I used this almond/coconut blend)

1 frozen banana

1/2 c. frozen blueberries

1 scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder

1/2 scoop super green powder (optional)

1 tsp Maca powder (optional)

Blend until smooth & enjoy!  I also finished off my carton of goat yogurt with some extra blueberries & blackberries mixed in.

Off to go walk Maya for 2.5 miles!

What is your standard breakfast?  Mine varies but lately it has included lots of goat yogurt!  I can’t get enough!
